While They Burn it Down, We Build What Matters. Issue 23

Dear Reader,

The Catalyst Perspective

A few weeks ago, I joined award-winning journalist Robin Hamilton on her upcoming podcast, Democracy Does: The Civic Power Playbook. I was honored to be featured as her first guest and look forward to following her work once she launches during August. As we wrapped up, she asked:

“What can people do right now, when everything feels out of control?”

She could’ve meant the violence against rights, the unraveling of the social safety net, the lawlessness at the top. But I didn’t point to Congress. I didn’t point to the White House.

I pointed home.

Because while there are people in Washington fighting to hold the line - - especially among Democrats; our real strength is built locally. And the people who benefit when we feel hopeless, disconnected, or checked out? They’re counting on us to give up.

But if you’re reading this, I know better.

You're not frozen.

You're not helpless.

You're needed.

That’s why I recently signed up to volunteer again at a local food pantry. It’s something I’ve done over the course of my life, and it brings me real joy; especially when I get to connect with seniors, carry groceries to their cars, offer kind words, and just be present in a moment that might otherwise feel isolating or hard.

I’ve known food insecurity personally. So I know what that kindness can mean.

This work, this showing up….. it’s not only necessary.
It’s healing. It’s connective. It’s joyful.
And it’s how we reclaim the power we’ve been told doesn’t exist.

The Power Move: Strategy & Perspective

When government fails to meet people’s basic needs, it doesn’t just create harm; it breeds voter apathy.

Because if people don’t see experience systems working in their favor, they stop believing they were ever built to serve them.

This is why Ecosystem Building - the “E” in my SCALE™ Framework isn’t optional.
It’s how we take care of one another while we work to transform policy.
It’s how we protect people while we build political power.

This is also about Confidence and Cognitive Reframing - not letting despair be the only story. Not waiting on broken systems to fix themselves.

It’s Strength-Based Leadership to act from what you can offer.

And it’s Aligned Values to show up for people whether the cameras are rolling or not.

Your impact doesn’t require permission.

It requires action.

Ally in Action: A Note for the Men on This List

We need you.

Not as saviors. Not as spokesmen. But as steady, strategic partners.

Too often, women are carrying the emotional, logistical, and community load while also being undercut, disrespected, or dismissed.

This moment demands more of you - not in theory, but in action:

  • Ask the women leaders in your life how you can support them
  • Show up for the unglamorous, unpaid, unnoticed work
  • Leverage your privilege without centering your ego

Don’t wait to be asked. Make yourself useful.

Take Action Today

  • Volunteer at a local pantry or shelter, even once a month makes a difference
  • Bring extra supplies like tissues, crayons, or snacks to classrooms and shelters
  • Check in on a neighbor or elder and offer practical help like yardwork or errands
  • Text three friends and challenge them to take one local action this week

We don’t need more silence.

We need neighbors who hold the line and hold each other.

Final Words

They’re burning it down.
We’re building what matters.

Because silence isn’t just complicity.
It’s betrayal of the people in your community who need you most right now.

Be louder. Be local. Be unapologetic.

Dear Reader, The Catalyst Perspective You Don’t Need a Podium to Lead; You Need Proximity. A couple months ago, I walked into the DG Fish Food Pantry… not as a strategist, not as a coach. Just a woman ready to serve. There was no speech. No clipboard. Just a quiet welcome from a circle of women who let me observe, move alongside them, and be part of the rhythm. They were collaborative. Calm. Focused. Kind. Then someone walked in with tomatoes—garden-grown, deep red, still warm from the sun. A...

Dear Reader, The Catalyst Perspective You could change the names, change the state, change the seat, and the patterns would still show up. Because they’re not personal. They’re systemic. I’ve worked with women mayors, city managers, and municipal directors across the country. Brilliant leaders navigating crises with skeleton teams and relentless public pressure. And let me be clear: I’ve lived it too. As mayor, I didn’t have a dedicated communications team. I was writing press releases myself...

Dear Reader, The Secret Weapon for Women Leaders No One’s Talking About The Catalyst Perspective She’s a first-time mayor, a mother, and officially a “part-time” elected official—if you can call leading a city of over 20,000 people part-time. Spoiler alert: it’s not!!! She was juggling a full-time job, a young child, and a city that expected her to be everywhere. She carried the guilt of missing events she was invited to because if she wasn’t at every event, did she really measure up? Sound...
